Sherwood Forest RV Resort in Aitkin, Minnesota, has introduced a new 18-hole miniature golf course designed and installed by Adventure Golf & Sports (AGS). Located approximately 100 miles north of Minneapolis/St. Paul along U.S. Highway 169, Sherwood Forest spans 400 acres near Mille Lacs Lake and includes over 800 campsites across six themed “towns”: London, Derby, Banbury, Cannock Chase, Nottingham, and Canterbury.
The new course replaces a previous mini-golf layout built by association member volunteers over two decades ago. According to Campground Manager Andy Bober, the new mini golf course offers a recreational activity that appeals to multiple generations. He noted that the previous course had deteriorated significantly over time, as it was constructed from wood placed directly on the ground, leading to rot and safety concerns.
The new Modular Advantage course uses interlocking, patented panels made from recycled materials that are permeable, allowing for efficient water drainage and rapid playability after rainfall.
Unlike traditional concrete courses, the Modular Advantage system avoids issues like surface cracking caused by freeze-thaw cycles, making it particularly suitable for Minnesota’s climate. Bober highlighted that the Modular Advantage Course was particularly appealing due to its adaptability to the seasonal climate, low maintenance requirements, and straightforward construction and implementation process.
Nine of the 18 holes are ADA-compliant, ensuring accessibility for all players. The remaining holes incorporate varied contours, elevations, and faux sand traps to enhance the challenge. Several holes are rated as par-3 and par-4, adding diversity to the course’s gameplay.
The miniature golf course complements an array of amenities offered at Sherwood Forest, including a half-sized basketball court, pickleball courts, bocce ball, a horseshoe pit, a pavilion for seasonal dances, and four pools: a main pool, a sports pool, a wading pool, and a whirlpool.
Sherwood Forest explored local construction options and considered building a new course themselves before contracting AGS. “And it appeared to be a good quality product and the membership appears to be enjoying it,” Bober said, as reported by Global Amusements Play.
AGS’s expertise extends to designing and installing eco-friendly Modular Advantage Mini Golf systems as well as traditional concrete courses and other recreational attractions. Their designs are tailored for diverse locations, including campgrounds, amusement parks, hotels, and cruise ship decks.
