Minnesota RV Park’s Proposed Expansion Receives Backlash

Residents have expressed concerns over the planned expansion of an RV park east of International Falls (Minnesota).

According to a report, Rainy Lake Vacation Campgrounds wanted to increase the number of spaces by 17, but it has since been reduced to 14.

The majority would be located at the north end of the campground, near a Department of Natural Resources boat landing.

During a public meeting, Barb Nelson addressed her concerns about the expansion, saying the area was already too congested.

“How would you like to have 14 giant RVs placed next door to you. Fourteen new docks in a tiny little bay where we all play, and children swim?” Nelson asked.

Other concerns related to road accessibility, location, and the impact on property values were also raised.

Bob Helke says many residents favor the owners of the campground but not in the area in which the new RV spaces could be.

“I think that really destroys a good part of the value of the property around it. Especially (for) the people that have put a lot of hard work and a lot of money into their lake homes,” says Helke.

The Koochiching County Board of Commissioners delayed making a final decision until they had the opportunity to inspect the property themselves.
