The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) planned to update the management plan for Buffalo River State Park, aiming to set a clear direction for the park’s operations and development over the next 15 to 20 years. The meeting was an early step in a comprehensive planning process designed to gather input and refine goals for the park.
According to a press release, the plan addresses key aspects such as recreational opportunities, resource management, and interpretative programming, ensuring the park continues to meet the needs of visitors while preserving its natural and cultural assets.
As part of this effort, the DNR hosted an open house on Monday, Dec. 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Minnesota State University Moorhead Regional Science Center, located at 663 164th Street South, Glyndon. DNR representatives offered detailed information during the open house.
Buffalo River State Park, located 14 miles east of Moorhead, is a key natural area along the Buffalo River. Known for its landscapes, the park features hiking trails, fishing spots, and opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife observation. It also boasts a seasonal campground and group camping facilities for overnight stays, making it a popular destination for both day visitors and extended visits.
The park’s historical significance is another major draw. Many of its structures were constructed during the late 1930s and early 1940s as part of the Works Progress Administration and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Buffalo River State Park is also home to one of Minnesota’s largest native and restored prairie landscapes. The adjoining Bluestem Prairie Scientific and Natural Area further highlights the park’s ecological value, offering an undisturbed prairie environment that serves as a habitat for numerous plant and animal species.
