Online Reservations Open for Rustic Cabin at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

For the first time, online reservations for a rustic cabin near the Lake Superior shoreline at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are now available.

The Twelvemile Cabin, located approximately one mile west of the Twelvemile Beach Campground along the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT), provides visitors with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

While the cabin is not new, this marks the first time it has been added to the list of reservable accommodations for overnight campers.

Based on input from park users during a public comment period last December, the cabin was identified as a “desired public amenity.”

Reservations for the cabin can be made starting July 4, with a nightly rate of $35, and are available from May 15 through October 15. Interested visitors can make reservations six months in advance through the recreation.gov website.

The cabin can accommodate up to eight people, featuring two bunk beds with two twin beds and two full beds. Mattresses are provided, but linens and blankets are not.

Park staff highlighted details about what guests can expect during their stay. “The cabin is a rustic structure along the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT), with no running water, electricity, or heat. The cabin is accessed by parking in the old amphitheater parking area (across from the first bathrooms), then hiking approximately one mile west of the Twelvemile Beach Campground on the NCT,” the staff said, as reported by M Live Michigan.

The cabin’s rustic nature adds to its appeal, offering a genuine outdoor experience. While there is no running water in the cabin, visitors can access water at the nearby Twelvemile Beach Campground. Additionally, a composting toilet is available on-site.

Pets are not allowed at the cabin, a policy implemented to preserve the natural environment and ensure a peaceful experience for all guests.

Another aspect of the park is outdoor activities. The cabin’s location provides excellent access to surrounding natural attractions, including several hiking trails and the Lake Superior shoreline.

The cabin’s proximity to Lake Superior allows visitors to enjoy the shoreline and engage in water-based activities. The park’s website highlights the breathtaking views of the lake and the picturesque rock formations that give Pictured Rocks its name.
