Michigan State Parks Host Winter Magic Events

Michigan State Parks are hosting a series of special events throughout the month of February, providing visitors with the opportunity to experience the beauty of winter uniquely and excitingly. 

Events include lantern-lit night hikes, guided snowshoeing, and even a stroll under the full Snow Moon. These events will take place at various state parks across the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, catering to various skill levels, from beginner to advanced, according to a report by MLive.

Participants can partake in activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and hiking, with some parks, even providing a limited supply of snowshoes on a first-come, first-serve basis. 

The events are free, but it should be noted that a Recreation Passport is required for entrance to state parks. The list of events includes:

  • Lantern-lit snowshoe, Van Riper State Park. Kerosene lanterns light your way through the snow-filled woods. Feb. 3.
  • Lantern-lit snowshoe trail: Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Enjoy snowshoeing a 1-mile trail lit by more than 70 kerosene lanterns. Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 18, Feb. 25.
  • Guided snowshoe hike, Tahquamenon Falls State Park. A free guided hike through the forest of the Upper Falls. Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 18, Feb. 25.
  • Beginner snowshoe guided hike, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Enjoy a 1-mile beginner-friendly snowshoe loop through a frosty old-growth forest out to Lake Superior. Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 18, Feb. 25.
  • Advanced snowshoe guided hike, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Start off with a chairlift ride followed by a hike through deep powder on this 3-mile loop. Feb. 3, Feb. 10, Feb. 17, Feb. 24.
  • Lantern-lit trail hike, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Snowshoe, cross-country ski or hike a 1-mile trail loop at night, lit by over 70 lanterns. Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 18, Feb. 25.
  • Snow Moon hike, Maybury State Park. Take a guided hike on the trails of Maybury State Park under a full “Snow Moon.” Feb. 5.
  • Candlelight cross-country ski, Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area. Enjoy an evening of cross-country skiing on groomed trail illuminated by candles. Feb. 10.
  • Lantern-lit snowshoe hike, Mitchell State Park. Join the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center for a lantern-lit hike, campfire and hot chocolate. Snowshoes are available or bring your own. Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 10, Feb. 17, Feb. 24.
  • Lantern-lit ski, snowshoe and hike, Ludington State Park. Enjoy the crisp winter air with a hike or skiing through the wooded sand dunes and over the Big Sable River. Feb. 4, Feb. 18.
  • Winter snowshoe hike, Hoffmaster State Park. Join us for a snowshoe hike in the beautiful wooded dunes of Hoffmaster State Park. Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 18

These winter events provide a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the natural beauty of Michigan’s state parks during the winter months. Each event offers a different experience, whether it be snowshoeing through a frosty old-growth forest or taking a stroll under the full Snow Moon. 

The events are a great way for families, friends, and individuals to spend time outdoors and enjoy the beauty of winter.

Visitors can check the DNR events calendar for more information about the specific event’s location, time, pet rules, and other details. The parks are looking forward to welcoming visitors and providing them with a memorable winter experience.
