DNR Seeks Public Input on Proposed Campground, Lodging Facilities at Rockport Recreation Area

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is inviting public participation for the future development of Rockport Recreation Area, located along the Lake Huron shoreline in Alpena and Presque Isle counties.

A public open house and meeting will be held on October 3 at Alpena Township Hall. Attendees can share feedback on a draft development plan, which includes proposals for a campground, lodging facilities, expanded trail uses, and other infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing the visitor experience.

The proposed development seeks to align with the park’s Phase 2 general management plan. This plan looks to expand overnight accommodations, including new lodging facilities.

Rockport Recreation Area, a 4,237-acre park, offers a mix of history and outdoor adventure, boasting a former limestone quarry, unique geological formations, and opportunities for fossil hunting.

Visitors can explore remnants of the 300-acre quarry, sinkholes, and protected natural areas. The park has become a destination for outdoor enthusiasts who seek a variety of experiences, from hiking and biking to horseback riding and stargazing.

According to a press release, the DNR will host two sessions on October 3 as part of the public consultation. The open house, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., will allow visitors to drop in and view the proposed development plan while engaging with DNR staff and consultants.

A formal meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. will also provide an overview of the plan, followed by a question-and-answer session.

Randy Brown, the Rockport Recreation Area supervisor, emphasized the importance of public feedback during the development process. “Public input is essential as we begin to make plans to modernize this unique park and enhance the visitor experience,” Brown stated.

“We’re eager to hear ideas on how to best serve the growing number of anglers, trail users and rock hounds, including potential overnight accommodations and expanded trail uses,” he added.
