Steuben County Board Evaluates Campground Rate Increase

The Steuben County Board of Commissioners postponed a decision on potential camping rate increases at the Steuben County Campground, located at Crooked Lake.

This comes after revisiting discussions from the previous year, which resulted in a 15% rate hike implemented this year. Of the $500 increase from last year, about $300 was sufficient to fund a new dock system at the park, which was approximately $106,000.

The park offers 156 seasonal campsites with RV and camper hookups, a public beach, boat slips, and the Lion’s Club building for small conferences, receptions, and events.

The Steuben County Park and campground features a beach, boat ramp, electric sites, playground, restrooms/showers, seasonal campsites, tent camping, and water hookups. Currently, campers pay $3,300 for a full season, up from $2,800 in the previous year.

Parks Superintendent Scott Schwartz proposed a gradual increase over the next two years. Schwartz expressed his intention to review the minutes from 2023 meetings to determine if another rate increase was planned for 2025.

Commissioner Andy Laughlin mentioned that a three-year plan was discussed last year to align the county’s campground rates with those of the private sector. “There was some thought about getting the rates up where they should be, market wise,” Howard said, as reported by KPC News on August 5.

According to its website, Steuben County Park, located along the eastern shore of Crooked Lake in Northeast Indiana, showcases the lake region’s charm. This 74-acre rolling tract houses the county fairgrounds and a newly built 10,000 square-foot multi-purpose Event Center.

In addition to the Steuben County Campground, outdoor enthusiasts can visit nearby Lake James State Park. The park provides access to Lake James, a spot for boating, swimming, and fishing. Campsites are also available at both the Catawba River and Paddy’s Creek.

The park also offers numerous amenities to enhance visitors’ experiences, including seasonal boat rentals and ramps, a concession stand, and picnic shelters. Additionally, there is an amphitheater for events, a visitor center with exhibits, and seasonal beach access with a bathhouse.
