National Park Service Seeks Public Comments on Water System Project in Two Lassen Volcanic Campgrounds

The National Park Service (NPS) encourages the public to send comments or feedback regarding the project to improve Lassen Volcanic National Park’s (California) water treatment system for Lost Creek Campground and Volcano Adventure Camp.

The proposed project will replace the surface water collection system with a subsurface source. Once the well drilling succeeds, the park will construct a small pump, water tank, and treatment building to serve the campgrounds properly.

The project will help keep the drinking water in the campgrounds meet state drinking water standards, according to a news release. The public can see the detailed project information and submit written comments on the NPS Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/lostcreekwell

The water in these campgrounds becomes intermittently interrupted by a flush of volcanic ash-laden sediment coming from the ground near the Lost Creek’s spring-fed origin. During this period, water is not potable according to state standards and must be trucked if it is to serve people in Lost Creek and Volcanic Adventure campgrounds.

The public can currently comment on the project until June 19, 2022. Comments sent via mail must have a postmark no later than June 19, 2022. People sending their comments through the mail must submit them to:

Lassen Volcanic National Park

Attn: Improve Water Supply Project

P.O. Box 100  Mineral, CA 96063
The NPS values public input and looks forward to their participation in the project. For questions on how to submit comments about the project, reach out to park staff via e-mail at the e-mail us page or by calling (530) 595-4480.
