Katmai National Park Seeks Comments on Proposed Campground Fee Increase

Katmai National Park and Preserve (Alaska) is proposing a fee increase for overnight camping at Brooks Campground for the 2023 camping season.

According to a release, the increased revenue generated from campground fees will allow the park to keep up with the increasing cost of campground operations, better manage the facilities and ensure improved compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the campground.

Brooks Campground, an isolated destination that accommodates guests who want to visit Brooks Camp Development Area, is very popular and is open from May 1 to October 31.

The current campground fees have been in effect since 2013. The proposed fee increases will make the park’s campground fees consistent with other private and public camping facilities.

Reservations for 2023 will open on January 5, 2023, and can be made via recreation.gov

According to the National Park Service, the proposed changes in the recreation fee for Brooks Campground are:

  • Peak Season Rate (For the dates of June 1-September 17):
    • Current 2022 fee: $12.00 per person/night
    • Proposed 2023 fee: $18.00 per person/night
  • Non-peak Season Rate (May1-May 30 and September 18-October 31):
    • Current 2022 fee: $6.00 per person/night
    • Proposed 2023 fee: $10.00 per person/night

The $6.00 advance reservation fee that applies to every reservation will stay the same.

The park will begin accepting public comments regarding the proposed fee increases from September 1 until September 30, 2022.

As per its website, Katmai was established in 1918 to safeguard the volcanically devastated region surrounding Novarupta and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Today, Katmai National Park and Preserve also protects 9,000 years of human history and important habitat for salmon and thousands of brown bears.

Located at the mouth of the Brooks River and the shore of Naknek Lake, Brooks Campground draws people globally to see brown bears, enjoy world-class fishing, and learn about the history of the area. Brooks Campground also offers opportunities for great backcountry adventures.
