Retired Couple Launches New Career with Michigan’s Heart of the Forest Campground

After retiring from their careers in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Gary and Tracy Isbell set out in their RV to explore the country and find the right location to establish a campground. Their journey led them to northern Michigan, where they purchased Heart of the Forest Campground in September, launching a second career in outdoor hospitality.

“We stumbled across (Heart of the Forest Campground) on July 4 of last year,” Gary said, as reported by The Manistee News Advocate on April 15.

The couple had only planned a short stay, but they quickly connected with the community, attended a local fireworks show, and discovered that the property was for sale.

The campground, located behind White Tail Party Store on M-55, had been on the market for several years under previous owners Steve and Teresa VanAtter. The Isbells continued their travels around the Midwest before deciding to make an offer.

“Our thoughts were, ‘this is a quaint little town and we love it’,” he said. After finalizing the sale, they quickly became immersed in the operations.

“September of last year was very busy with campers because it was salmon season, and it was a case of getting thrown in the deep end right away, learning how everything worked,” he added.

With a background in IT, Gary said the transition to campground ownership has been a welcome change. “I worked in an office for over 30 years in an IT department and really enjoyed do things outside,” he said.

Since acquiring the property, the Isbells have taken steps to integrate into the Wellston community and enhance the guest experience.

Heart of the Forest offers 85 campsites with a range of options, including rustic sites, full-service hookups, a cabin, and rental trailers.

The Isbells are also introducing glamping accommodations, including a retrofitted trailer from the 1960s and new glamping tents.

The property also features a central bath house with showers, toilets, and sinks, as well as a utility room equipped with laundry and dishwashing facilities.

Firewood and ice are available for purchase onsite, and Wi-Fi is being installed to meet guest expectations for connectivity.
