“Time to Retire and See What’s Next”: Alberta’s Sundance Lodges Sold to Basecamp Resorts

Stacia and Ryan Green, along with their mother Sheryl, have been carrying on their father Brian’s legacy Sundance Lodges since his passing in 2018.

The Green family founded and built the adventure camping destination from the ground up, opening doors in 1992 for visitors to camp in beautiful canvas tipis and trapper’s tents to provide a comfortable way to experience the Canadian Rockies. After 30 years The Greens have retired and sold the property to Canadian hospitality company Basecamp Resorts.

“We’ve come a long way; I still remember the day my husband bought our first tipi and told me about his dream to build a campground, to pioneer comfort camping here in the Rockies,” said Sheryl Green.

Located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies and recently featured on the Price is Right and in National Geographic, Sundance Lodges has become a popular mountain campground destination that attracts visitors from across Canada and around the world and has hosted multiple generations of families.

“Offering families and friends a place to make memories while sitting around a campfire, cooking together, and disconnecting from the stress of everyday life has been the privilege of a lifetime,” said Stacia.

“I will miss seeing our guests, but it’s time to get mom retired and see what’s next.”

A family-run business, Sheryl ran the front side of the business including staffing, marketing, reservations, and the campground store for more than 25 years. She created the company logo out of construction paper in the early 90s before they had a computer and used a typewriter to launch the business.

In 2018, Sheryl took on more of a policy role while her kids stepped up to run the operations. Stacia took over Sheryl’s duties while her older brother Ryan took over the finances, maintenance, infrastructure and a recent expansion of additional trapper’s tents.

“The Green family built a truly special destination with Sundance Lodges and we are proud to be able to carry on their legacy of providing a pristine, beautiful place to camp for those seeking to explore the Canadian Rockies and connect with nature. This was a perfect deal as all parties share a love of mountain life and providing travelers with one-of-a-kind accommodations that highlight that love,’ said Sky McLean, founder and CEO, Basecamp Resorts.

Camping by the foot of the mountains is an incredible, memorable travel experience and we look forward to welcoming guests starting this May.”

Basecamp Resorts will continue to run and maintain the property as a premium campground destination under the Sundance Lodges name.

Located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, the Sundance Lodges campground is set in the forest and close to a variety of outdoor activities. It is also situated for easy day trips to Calgary, Banff, and Canmore.

The property features a Trading Post that sells basic groceries and gifts, as well as provides hot showers and toilets for all guests. Guests are welcome to rent camping supplies or bring their own.

Basecamp Resorts will open Sundance Lodges reservations for the 2023 season starting early April.
