Clare County Council has granted planning permission for a new camping and glamping site at Baunkyle House, located in Baunkyle, Corofin.
The approved development includes ten glamping pods, one short-term rental chalet, 19 parking spaces for short-term stay camper vans, and a new car park.
Additionally, an existing hay barn will be renovated to house reception, along with upgrades for communal facilities such as showers, toilets, and a recreation room, among other associated works.
According to a report by the Irish Independent, applicant Brian Keane emphasized the demand for tourist accommodation in the area.
“There is an acute lack of tourist accommodation in the local area so the proposed development will greatly help address this issue,” stated the planning permission.
“This will have a direct economic benefit locally, particularly when considering the proximity of the proposed development to the village center.”
Clare County Council approved the development this week, with 15 conditions attached to the permission.
Among the conditions, the council specified that the accommodation units must be used exclusively for short-term tourist stays. The council also stipulated that long-term or permanent stays would not be permitted, and no units could be sold separately from the overall development.
Additionally, the council requires that the existing trees, scrub, and vegetation on the site be retained in full to protect the area’s rural character and enhance its visual amenities.
The new facility could contribute to the growing glamping options in Clare, providing tourists and outdoor enthusiasts with a variety of choices during their stay.
Clare plays host to a number of notable glamping spots. Nearby, Kilbane Glamping in East Clare offers farm-style stays with scenic views, while Beds of Silk in Labasheeda provides luxury shepherds’ huts powered by renewable biogas.
In Lahinch, Castledarcy Glamping combines rustic charm with family-friendly amenities and easy access to the Cliffs of Moher and the Wild Atlantic Way.
The addition of Baunkyle House’s glamping site is expected to further strengthen County Clare’s reputation as a destination for alternative accommodations while boosting the local economy.
