Have a Blast: ‘Volcano Huts’ in Iceland Combines Glamping and Adventure

Glamping continues to erupt, with latest data from Kampgrounds of America (KOA) suggesting that half of campers are seeking a glamping experience this year. Out of those numbers, campers craving an international getaway might just find this fire-and-ice glamping experience in Iceland one for the books.

Between glaciers and volcanoes in Húsadalur Valley, nestled in the Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) Nature Reserve, is Volcano Huts, a basecamp owned and operated by licensed tour operator and destination management company Volcano Trails.

At Volcano Huts, a warm and cozy respite after a day of trekking Iceland’s famous trails awaits the modern adventurer. Anything from rustic camping mountain huts to luxe glamping tents provide the serene rest that every adventurer deserves. There are also sheepherders cottages and campsites at the property.

For those wondering what an Icelandic glamping experience means, like most glampgrounds, the spacious tents at Volcano Huts are fitted with twin or double beds, include chairs to lounge in and tables to hold luggage, and each comes with an electric air-blow heater. Yet, what sets this property apart is how one can sit by their tent (or the campfire) and enjoy the view over the Þórsmörk mountains.

The toilets and showers are located next to the camp, and so are the LavaGrill Restaurant & Bar restaurant and Campers Dining Hall. The LavaSPA featuring a sauna and a sitting pool with geothermally heated water from nearby Húsadalur Valley, is just a few steps away.

Hikers will also lava good night’s sleep in the Eyjafjallajökull Cabin. This accommodation offers 14 cozy rooms with bunk beds.

For families that cherish privacy, Sheepherders Cottages house up to five guests in bunk beds, one of which has a double lower bed for couples. The cottages each have a kitchenette, a kitchen table, and chairs. Each Sheepherders Cottage has electric lighting, heating, and cold running water.

Meanwhile, sleeping up to 16 campcationers each, the property’s two Katla Mountain Huts radiate a snug hostel-style feel with bunk beds and a sleeping loft. Each cabin has cold running water and is fitted with a kettle to heat water, cups, and glasses.

For a more rustic feel while immersing themselves in beautiful views and enjoying easy access to all the best hiking trails in Þórsmörk, guests can book the camping sites. Still, campers can enjoy access to the dining hall, shared bathrooms, free WiFi (main service building), and even the sauna, showers, and a sitting pool nearby.

Getting to Volcano Huts is an adventure itself, as guests have to take a special 4×4 mountain bus to get to the location, crossing big rivers on the way.

When in the area, nature and hiking enthusiasts will appreciate Þórsmörk Nature Reserve’s easy access to Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails. Volcano Trails offers day tours where visitors can embark on a journey and absorb the panoramic views of the volcanic landscape in just a couple of hours.

Glamping adventurers can also book a Þórsmörk Superjeep Safari tour where they can drive through the beautiful landscape with mountainous glaciers and volcanoes everywhere in a modified 4×4 Superjeep. According to its website, the Superjeep drive includes crossing glacial streams and rivers that flow from underneath the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier and carve the valley all the way to the ocean on the south coast of Iceland.

With a combination of exhilarating local adventures, breathtaking views, and decadent accommodations, Volcano Huts in Iceland provides an explosive experience, making every vacation a blast.
