Survey Reveals Surge in Young Canadian Campers in 2022

The 2023 Kampgrounds of America, Inc.’s (KOA) North American Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report reveals that more than half a million new Canadian households ventured out to experience camping for the first time in 2022.

As the May long weekend marks the official start of the camping season, KOA anticipates a busy year for camping enthusiasts.

One of the significant findings of the report is the shift in the age demographics of Canadian campers. Gen Z campers made up 18% of all campers in 2022, compared with 8% in the previous year. Millennials also saw an increase, reaching 46% in 2022 versus 31% in 2021.

A love for the great outdoors drives 38% of all campers, while younger campers are drawn to camping due to positive family vacation experiences. The report highlights that Canadian campers are eager to try various travel experiences this year, with a focus on natural events, including eclipses, migrations, stargazing, and meteor showers.

Another popular trend among Canadian campers is food tourism and visiting small towns.

The 2023 North American Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report also found that 50% of new campers worked during their camping trips, doubling the rate from 2021. Consequently, access to quality Wi-Fi became an essential amenity, with twice as many campers stating that access significantly impacted their ability to camp more often and for extended periods.

For new campers, it’s crucial to consider a few essential camping tips. A focus on safety, packing light, choosing appropriate gear, and practicing leave-no-trace principles can greatly enhance the camping experience.

Furthermore, acknowledging the different types of camping experiences available is important for catering to individual preferences. Options such as tent camping, RV camping, and glamping provide a range of accommodations to suit various needs.

The surge in young Canadian campers signifies an increased interest in exploring the great outdoors and engaging in unique travel experiences. The findings from the 2023 KOA North American Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report can help both new and experienced campers make the most of their adventures.
