Ontario Offers Free Admission to Provincial Parks on July 19

The Ontario government is providing free day-use access to provincial parks on Friday, July 19, as part of the Healthy Parks Healthy People Day initiative. This annual celebration is designed to promote the health benefits of spending time in nature, aligning with a global movement encouraging outdoor activities.

Andrea Khanjin, minister of the environment, conservation and parks, encouraged all Ontarians to take advantage of the free pass to Ontario Parks, highlighting the opportunity to immerse in the “joy and wonder” of exploring the great outdoors.

“Whether you’re looking to get some exercise or seeking a fun and affordable day with your family, I hope this free day will give more people the opportunity to explore everything that their local provincial park has to offer,” Khanjin said.

Ontario Parks, the largest provider of outdoor recreational opportunities in the province, offers various activities such as hiking, cycling, paddling, and swimming. The parks are equipped with programs and facilities that ensure year-round enjoyment of nature.

To enhance these recreational opportunities, the Ontario government is adding 300 new campsites and bringing electrical services to 800 existing sites at several parks. This marks the largest addition of new and electrified campsites in Ontario Parks’ history.

Since 2018, the province has invested CA$55.4 million in maintaining and expanding facilities, including roofed accommodations, to meet the growing demand of visitors.

According to a press release, throughout the summer, Ontario Parks provides numerous ways to engage with nature. In-park discovery programs offer educational activities such as guided hikes, allowing participants to gain confidence in nature and around wildlife. These programs cater to both children and adults, fostering a deeper connection with the natural environment.

In addition, the 30×30 Nature Challenge, held in August, encourages people to spend 30 minutes in nature for 30 days. This initiative aims to integrate outdoor activities into daily routines, Additionally, the Take a Hike Day, scheduled for August 10, features guided hikes at various parks across the province.
