Provincial Gov’t Awards Vedder River Campground Over CA$400K for Improvements

Vedder River Campground in Chilliwack (British Columbia, Canada) is slated for significant upgrades following a CA$483,500 grant from the British Columbia provincial government. This funding is part of a broader initiative to revitalize the province’s tourism sector, particularly in the wake of recent challenges.

Infrastructure improvements at the campground will include upgrades to existing serviced sites, the addition of new serviced sites, and enhancements to customer amenities such as public Wi-Fi, recreational facilities, and accessible washroom and shower facilities. These upgrades are expected to not only improve the camping experience but also stimulate the local economy.

Chilliwack-Kent MLA Kelli Paddon emphasized the economic potential of the investment, suggesting it could draw visitors globally and strengthen the local economy. The campground is envisioned as a hub for tourists who will contribute to the economy by engaging in local businesses and recreational activities.

The funding for Vedder River Campground is part of the Destination Development Fund, into which the province has invested CA$60 million since 2022. The fund aims to rebuild tourism to pre-2020 levels by 2024 and supported 90 projects in its first year. It is designed to make communities competitive destinations for tourism and strengthen local economies.

Lana Popham, minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, recognized British Columbia as a world-class destination with tourism as a key economic driver. The past three years have posed challenges for the tourism industry, including economic uncertainties and extreme weather events. Investments in tourism infrastructure are seen as crucial in supporting the sector and creating vibrant communities.

The Vedder River Campground upgrades are expected to enhance the visitor experience significantly. Located near Cultus Lake, the campground offers activities such as fishing, hiking, rafting, kayaking, and mountain biking. The upgrades are anticipated to make the campground a premier destination for both relaxation and adventure.

The provincial government’s investment in the campground’s infrastructure and amenities is indicative of its commitment to revitalizing the tourism industry and supporting local economies. This investment is expected to lead to a more robust tourism sector that benefits everyone from local business owners to international visitors.

Vedder River Campground upgrades, supported by the provincial government’s grant, are poised to enhance the camping experience and boost the local economy in Chilliwack. The project symbolizes growth, resilience, and the enduring appeal of British Columbia’s natural beauty, positioning Chilliwack as an even more attractive destination for tourists worldwide.
