Garibaldi Lake Campground Closed This Long Weekend Due to Flooding

Flooding has prompted the closure of a campground at a popular British Columbia (Canada) provincial park this long weekend.

As per a report, Garibaldi Lake Campground, which is situated in Garibaldi Park and has 50 sites, closed on Friday and will remain closed until further notice, as per BC Parks.

“High heat and unseasonably large snowpack has caused the lake to rise and flood the Garibaldi Lake Campground. This has impacted facilities and is blocking access in or out of the campground,” the website update reads.

According to its website, Garibaldi Provincial Park was established on March 7, 1927. In honor of the 19th-century Italian patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi, the park is known for its natural beauty and endless hiking opportunities.

Another remote campground was closed on Saturday; the 12-site Rampart Ponds campground was closed due to a bridge washout.

Last month, the park shut down three campgrounds as well as a day-use area because of the presence of an aggressive and food-conditioned bear.

On July 11, Helm Creek Campground reopened, and day-use was resumed at the Cheakamus Lake Trailhead. The park’s website states that the bear wasn’t trapped, indicating that it has likely moved on.

But, Cheakamus Lake and Singing Creek campgrounds remain closed to ensure park visitors’ safety and reduce food attractants further. There’s no timeframe for the reopening of the campgrounds.

It’s regrettable that the Garibaldi Lake Campground is closed this weekend due to flooding. New information about the closure includes the impact on reservation holders and alternative camping options in the area. Visitors with reservations are advised to contact BC Parks for refunds or to reschedule their trips, while exploring nearby campgrounds such as Cheakamus Lake or Black Tusk as alternative options for camping in the area.
