Lake Louise Upgrades in Banff National Park to Enhance Outdoor Access, Wildlife Safety

The Lake Louise area in Banff National Park has seen a CA$12 million investment in infrastructure upgrades, designed to enhance visitor experiences and facilitate wildlife movement. The initiative was unveiled by Steven Guilbeault, minister of environment and climate change and the minister overseeing Parks Canada.

Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, which attract millions of visitors each year, have experienced a 70% increase in vehicle traffic over the past decade. The upgrades aim to address traffic congestion, improve safety, and minimize disturbances to wildlife in the region.

National parks in Canada are core to our identity as a nation and to boosting our tourism portfolio. Through these infrastructure improvements, the government provides visitors with high-quality experiences while protecting these beloved locations for future generations. Maintaining wildlife habitat connectivity is also paramount to our work,” Guilbeault said, as reported by Discover Airdrie on December 10.

A key component of the project is a new wildlife underpass on Whitehorn Road, supported in part by CA$1.15 million from the Lake Louise Ski Area. This crossing facilitates safe movement for species such as mule deer, lynx, and grizzly bears by connecting critical wildlife corridors.

The project also included upgrades to Lake Louise Drive, improving traffic flow. Despite the construction taking place during the peak summer season, the work was completed on schedule and within budget, with minimal disruption to visitors.

To further address sustainability, Parks Canada is developing a Lake Louise Area Visitor Use Management Plan. The plan aims to ensure sustainable recreation in this high-traffic area. Preliminary results are expected this winter, with additional consultations planned for early 2025.
