Ponoka County council approved a CA$10,000 contribution to support the operational costs of Johnson’s Beach Campground for 2024. The contribution, discussed during their regular meeting on June 18, aims to help the campsite after experiencing a budget deficit in 2023.
Johnson’s beach campsite is situated between Bashaw and Ponoka on the southern shore of Red Deer Lake. The campground is located within a 30-minute drive of four golf courses: Ponoka, Bashaw, Country Nine, and New Norway. The campsite operates seasonally from May through September, although these dates are subject to change.
According to an article by Ponoka News on August 7, Tim Johnson, representing the campsite at Red Deer Lake, attended the meeting to highlight the financial challenges faced by the campsite.
He explained that the campsite had previously received an annual government grant of $8,000, which ended several years ago.
Johnson also emphasized the need to upgrade the campsite’s electrical infrastructure. While the campsite has seen various upgrades over the years, the power supply remains outdated. Currently offering only 15 amps, Johnson noted the importance of increasing it to 30 amps.
Despite the lake no longer being a major attraction, Johnson pointed out that the campsite offers recreational opportunities that can still draw people to the area.
The amenities at Johnson’s Beach Campsite are designed to provide comfort and convenience. The site provides 15-amp hookups, and a caretaker is available on-site to assist. The campsite also offers extended stay rates.
For those who enjoy a campfire, fire pits and firewood, available for purchase, are provided. Additionally, the campground offers lush toilets, limited grocery supplies, group camping facilities, horseshoe pits, and a mini-golf course.
Picnic shelters and tables are also available for gatherings, and children can enjoy the playgrounds. Other amenities include coin-operated showers and water taps for guests’ use.
Another aspect of the campground is accessibility, offering wheelchair access throughout the site.
