Hidden Cove Campground: A Secluded Gem in Alberta’s Maligne Lake

Alberta’s Rocky Mountains boast stunning vistas, and Jasper National Park is a prime example. Among its many treasures, the Hidden Cove Campground on Maligne Lake offers a distinctive backcountry camping opportunity for those seeking a secluded and intimate experience with nature.

Situated 3.5 kilometers from the shore, accessing the Hidden Cove Campground requires visitors to traverse the lake via canoe or kayak.

According to a report by the Daily Hive, the journey can take 45 minutes to two hours, depending on weather conditions and the weight of the vessel.

As tour boats operate on the lake from 9 am to 6:30 pm, creating large waves, it is advisable for paddlers to embark early in the day.

The campground is nestled in a picturesque location, featuring a shelter with a picnic table and wood stove. To protect both campers and wildlife, each campsite is equipped with a bear-proof food storage locker, where all food, garbage, beverages, scented items, and stoves must be stored.

Since firewood is not provided at the campground, campers should bring their own if they plan to cook or enjoy a campfire. Additionally, it is recommended to carry a water filter or four to five liters of clean water per person per day for a comfortable stay.

Designed to offer tranquility, Hidden Cove campground has a maximum capacity of 14 people, allowing campers to enjoy a peaceful environment and immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.

Stays at Hidden Cove are limited to two nights, encouraging visitors to make the most of their time on the island. Engaging in activities such as paddling around the island, breathing in the fresh mountain air, and capturing photographs can create enduring memories of this unique camping experience.

Parks Canada has provided a suggested packing list to help campers prepare for their trip, which is available on their website. Reservations for a campsite at Hidden Cove on Maligne Lake can be made online.

The Hidden Cove campsite at Maligne Lake demonstrates the diverse range of outdoor hospitality options in Alberta’s Rockies.
