Alberta Parks is launching a new camping discount program that will make outdoor recreation more accessible for Alberta seniors starting May 1, offering a 25% reduction on camping fees at select provincial park campgrounds.
The initiative covers individual, walk-in, and equestrian campsites across 142 front-country campgrounds, which include approximately 6,400 campsites throughout the province.
Seniors planning their camping adventures can begin making reservations for May arrivals starting January 31. The booking process requires eligible residents to select “Alberta Seniors” during their online reservation at shop.albertaparks.ca.
Todd Loewen, minister of forestry and parks, emphasized the importance of initiatives aimed at making Alberta’s parks more accessible and affordable, particularly for seniors.
He highlighted that these efforts not only enhance seniors’ quality of life and support their health and well-being but also encourage them to explore the province’s breathtaking landscapes and hidden natural treasures.
Alternative booking options include phone reservations or visiting first-come, first-served locations.
Valid identification is required to verify eligibility. Current provincial data shows that seniors account for roughly 16% of reservable camping nights within Alberta Parks’ system, which manages approximately 14,000 campsites, including 9,000 reservable sites and 5,000 first-come, first-served locations.
“Seniors appreciate every opportunity to enjoy and recreate in parks more affordably. By providing these discounts on select campsites more seniors can take advantage of hidden gem campgrounds across Alberta, promoting their health and well-being,” Larry Mathieson, president and CEO at Unison, said, as reported by Town and Country Today.
The program excludes certain camping accommodations, including group sites, comfort camping facilities, seasonal camping, and backcountry camping options.
