Great Southern Walk in New South Wales Begins

The construction has started on the 67km Great Southern Walk, connecting the New South Wales (NSW) cities of Sydney to Wollongong and crossing three distinctive coastal regions.

The NSW Government announced the five-day/four-night Great Southern Walk in July 2021, and work has already begun on the first part of the track that connects Bald Hill and Stanwell Tops. The new trail will connect the southern portion of the Royal National Park with the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area, according to a report by Great Walks.

James Griffin, the minister of environment, said the walk would connect several established trails. It will run a stunning path from Sydney’s Kamay Bay National Park along the coast in Royal National Park, then into Bulli Tops in the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area.

Two of them, Wattamolla and Garie, in the Royal National Park, are the areas that are being considered for the construction of new accommodation and camping facilities comprising basic hiking platforms, camping platforms, cabins, and a camp kitchen, as other amenities. The proposed areas are because they’ve been previously disturbed and can be used for small-sized camping sites.

The proposed campground will be a walk-in as well as a basic hut-type accommodation to be found in those who live in the Madden Plains area of the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area and plans to locate places for an overnight hiking alternative.

The fourth campsite could be the recently improved and opened Bonnie Vale Campground at the northernmost point of Royal National Park.

It is reported that the NSW Government is spending AU$80 million to develop several multi-day hiking trails across the state. This follows a rise in visits to national parks throughout the state since boundaries were shut down due to COVID-19.

“From Border Ranges in the north to Kosciuszko in the south, to Hat Head in the east and Mungo in the west, visitation across our extraordinary national parks estate has surged in the past 12 months,” said NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet.
