Geelong City May Have Caravan Park for Airport and Raceway

The City of Greater Geelong in the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia is considering a planning application that could start the construction of a 55-site caravan park at Lara.

The park will stand at a Princes Highway-fronting site west of the town, south of the Avalon Raceway, and near the Avalon Airport entrance. It is also 14.86 hectares in a farm zone and includes a greyhound track and related buildings used as a training center, which will stay if the construction starts, according to a report.

The planners said in their application that the camping complex would primarily serve Avalon passengers and tourists for events at the raceway and its motorsports center.

“The proposal will be a positive addition to the variety of tourist accommodation offerings within the area, attracting more visitors to the region … (and) would have a significant positive economic impact to the surrounding area,” planners said.

The site would include 36 portable cabins, ten ensuite sites, nine powered caravan spots alongside recreation facilities, a camp kitchen, and an amenities block.

Construction would take place towards the north of greyhound facilities, leaving the southeast area open for flooding risk from a dam.

The application comes as COGG is contemplating setting up its own caravan park in Geelong’s northern region to meet the expected increase in demand after Spirit of Tasmania begins ferrying passengers to and from Geelong later this year.
