Cala Gran Caravan Park has submitted plans to extend its annual operating season by one month, with the Fleetwood, Lancashire, holiday park seeking permission to open from February 1 rather than March 1 beginning in 2027.
The application was lodged with Wyre Borough Council in mid-August and was validated last week, allowing it to proceed through the council’s planning process. The proposal would alter the period during which the park is permitted to operate under its current planning conditions.
According to The Gazette, “approval of the application would enable Haven to support growing domestic tourism trade, which itself plays a key role in the national economy and to local markets.”
The application states that Cala Gran currently operates successfully for 10 months of the year. Extending the operating period by one month would add 29 days in a standard year, or 30 days in a leap year, to the park’s annual trading calendar.
“The park operates successfully across 10 months of the year, so this additional 29 days (30 days in a leap year) represents a modest but important increase to the number of operational days at a time that is traditionally quiet for tourism in Wyre and the adjacent authorities,” the statement continues.
For outdoor hospitality operators, the proposal illustrates one way an established holiday park can seek to increase its trading calendar without a corresponding expansion of its physical footprint. Haven has confirmed that the proposed change would not require additional caravans, parking facilities, or other infrastructure at the site.
The operator also says the extended season would be managed using the existing workforce, with no additional employees proposed as part of the application. This means the operational change would primarily involve making the existing site and staffing arrangements available for an additional month rather than creating a new accommodation or employment capacity.
If approved, the February opening would give Cala Gran an earlier start to its 2027 holiday season and provide an additional period in which the park could accommodate visitors ahead of the traditional March opening.
The proposal could also be relevant to operators assessing whether changes to permitted operating periods can provide additional revenue opportunities during traditionally quieter tourism periods, although the commercial impact would depend on factors such as demand, operating costs, staffing capacity, and local planning requirements.
The application will now move to the next stage of Wyre Borough Council’s planning process. A final decision will determine whether Cala Gran can implement the proposed February 1 opening date from 2027.
