A&K Sanctuary, the boutique luxury lodge, camp, and riverboat brand of Abercrombie & Kent, plans to open a new glamping destination on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni in late 2027, bringing a five-suite Airstream camp to the world’s largest salt flat.
Called Samkani Camp, the development will feature five architect-designed Airstream suites intended to combine luxury accommodations with a remote, low-impact setting.
A sixth Airstream will serve as a lounge and dining space. The accommodations are planned with plush interiors and details including blue Bolivian marble, while their metallic exteriors are designed to reflect the surrounding salt and sky.
The Salar de Uyuni covers more than 4,000 square miles in southwestern Bolivia near the crest of the Andes Mountains. The high-altitude destination is known for its expansive white salt landscape and nighttime views, but accommodation options in the area remain limited.
A&K Sanctuary plans to position Samkani Camp roughly 15 miles from other activity and development, creating a secluded lodging experience while maintaining the service levels associated with the luxury hotel sector.
Each suite will include a private guide and driver, with guests having access to more than 30 excursion options, according to Travel + Leisure.
Some experiences will be exclusive to A&K Sanctuary guests. Planned activities include visits to islands, volcanic caves, and lagoons, along with stargazing opportunities and nighttime experiences on the salt flat. Flamingos are among the wildlife visitors may encounter in the area.
The camp is also being designed around self-sufficiency and a reduced environmental footprint. The Airstreams are intended to blend visually with the landscape rather than introduce structures that contrast sharply with the surrounding salt flat. The camp’s name, Samkani, means “the one who dreams” in the language of Bolivia’s Indigenous Aymara community.
For outdoor hospitality operators, the project illustrates how mobile or modular accommodation can be positioned within high-value, destination-driven tourism models. Rather than relying solely on conventional campground infrastructure, Samkani Camp is designed around a small number of premium units, private services, curated excursions, and a highly specific natural setting.
The model also demonstrates how Airstreams can be incorporated into an upscale lodging concept while maintaining a connection to the surrounding environment.
Bookings for Samkani Camp are not yet open. The property is expected to be offered through A&K Tailormade journeys and small group journeys when it launches in late 2027. Prospective guests can currently register their interest through the camp’s website.
