FRVCA will host a free webinar Aug. 13 focused on Grounding Monitor Interrupter (GMI) requirements and their potential implications for campgrounds, RV parks and recreational vehicles.
The webinar, titled “GMI & RV Electricity: What You Need to Know to Be Prepared,” is scheduled for 10 a.m. Eastern and will feature Mike Sokol of RVelectricity and the No~Shock~Zone.
Sokol has followed and provided input on National Electrical Code GMI requirements for the past six years.
The session will address how GMI technology could affect campground electrical infrastructure and RVs, including questions about electrical pedestals, wiring and troubleshooting.
Sokol is scheduled to explain what a GMI is and when GMI-equipped RVs will begin appearing. The webinar also will address whether campground electrical pedestals will require special wiring to comply with GMI requirements.
Other topics will include whether pedestals with worn 30- and 50-amp outlets will need to be replaced and whether campgrounds with three-wire, 240-volt ungrounded service will need to install new ground wires.
The session also will examine how existing GFCI breakers on 30- and 50-amp outlets could interact with GMI requirements. Sokol will discuss whether campground staff can perform a simple test when a GMI-equipped RV cannot receive power.
The webinar will also cover how campground operators can identify RVs equipped with a GMI and whether a Fall-of-Potential ground rod impedance test is required.
Grounding and bonding will be another topic, with Sokol scheduled to explain the difference between the two electrical concepts.
The webinar will include a live question-and-answer session, giving attendees an opportunity to ask Sokol questions about GMI requirements and RV electrical systems.
The Aug. 13 session is positioned as an opportunity for campground and RV park operators to prepare for questions surrounding GMI-equipped RVs and the electrical systems used to provide them with power.
