Point Reyes National Seashore Invites Feedback on Proposed Campground Fee Increases

Point Reyes National Seashore in California is requesting public comment on a proposal to increase the fee for overnight stays at its park campgrounds. Increased revenue from campground fees will enable the park to better maintain facilities, enhance visitor services, and provide for better resource protection.

One hundred percent of the campground fees collected in Point Reyes are retained by the park. The additional revenue collected will support current and future park projects, which include:

  • Improvement and maintenance of park campgrounds
  • Rehabilitation of vault toilet facilities
  • Upgrades to campground facilities including picnic tables and food storage boxes
  • Repair and replacement of visitor information signage

Additionally, fee revenue helps to maintain critical supplies of park brochures, provide ranger-led education programming, and provide for additional staffing at high-visitation areas to provide visitors with safety information and to assist with responding to emergencies.

Point Reyes National Seashore campgrounds are extremely popular and enjoyed by thousands of park visitors each year. Comparability rate studies have been completed to ensure that park campground rates do not undercut business at private campgrounds in nearby communities. The pricing structure also brings Point Reyes National Seashore’s campgrounds into line with similar campgrounds in other parks in the area. The last campground fee increase at Point Reyes National Seashore was in 2010.

The proposed fee increases for Wildcat, Glen, Coast, and Sky campgrounds, and all Tomales Bay boat-in sites are: Standard tent site (1-6 people) from $20 to $40 per night; Small group site (7-14 people) from $40 to $80 per night; and Large group site (15-25 people) from $50 to $100 per night.

To comment on the proposed campground fee increase, please provide your comments between September 1, 2021, and October 1, 2021, online at parkplanning.nps.gov or by mail to: Superintendent, Point Reyes National Seashore – Proposed Campground Fee Increases, 1 Bear Valley Road, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956. If approved, the fee changes would take effect on January 1, 2022.
