Winter campers can now plan their visit to Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.

Grapevine creek campground, located on the northern end of the canyon, and Trail Creek Campground at Barry’s Landing (closer to Lovell, Wyoming) are open for winter camping. Both are equipped with pit toilets.

The Horseshoe Bend Campground remains open too, but the utilities have been turned off for the winter months. Campers at the campground will need to be self-contained or plan to use the facilities near the marina since the campground’s bathrooms are winterized. Camping fees for all camping areas have been waived for the winter.

Included in the winterized sites is the common corrals area, frequented by ranchers as well as people who camp with their livestock. This means there is no water in the troughs. Therefore, visitors must take enough water.

The boat launch will remain accessible. Courtesy docks at lake ramps will remain until the lake begins to freeze. Boaters should be aware that there’s more driftwood than usual for this season on the lake.

Campers this spring at Fort Smith’s Afterbay Campground will be able to benefit from improvements. The upgrades will include bigger campsites equipped with water and electric. However, in the meantime, the campsites are shut for renovations.
