Devil’s Lake State Park (Wisconsin) winter campsites were entirely booked on New Year’s Eve, according to a report.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural resources (DNR) has seen an increase in people who reserve winter camping sites since 2020.

The report also mentions Chad Baker, who has noticed the boost in winter camping.

“It’s fun to get out and play,” he said. “Normally, it’s a lot quieter than even what we see out here today.”

The resident advised campers to look for local wood close to their campsite and bring an ax to cut it. He also said to stay clear of cotton clothes because it makes people sweat and then freezes.

Campers must bring food, heat equipment, and water since the regular amenities of state parks are shut during winter.

“If you’re going to state parks that are open in the winter, the facilities are all shut off, so you are going to be forced to use pit toilets,” Blount said. “Typically, the water is shut off as well, so you’re going to need to bring your own water and keep it from freezing or have the ability to melt snow.”

DNR officials said year-round reservations are offered at around 20 Wisconsin forests and state parks.
