Kanawha County Commission (West Virginia) announced that it received $675,210 funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).
As per a report, the funds will be used for Upper Kanawha Valley Outdoor Recreation Program.
The commission said that the grant would be matched with the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation funding and the Kanawha County Commission, bringing the total project allocation budget to $1.2 million.
Commission President W. Kent Carper said that the Upper Kanawha Valley had been dealt a terrible hand. Still, he believes the award will benefit the residents of the UKV and every town along the Kanawha River – from Marmet to Montgomery.
The Kanawha County Commission completed the outdoor recreation-based economic development plan in 2021. The project will impact the 30-mile area east of Charleston to Gauley Bridge in Fayette County.
The project includes the development and design of trails, improved recreation river access, small business growth, and the launch of the Hatfield McCoy Trail System in Kanawha County.
