New or increased costs at 85 of more than 500 recreation sites in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington were proposed, a report said.

Within the Methow Valley Ranger District, new fees have been suggested at 32 locations, which include trails and campgrounds. A majority of the increases for campgrounds could be between $8 and $10, including a $5 fee for each additional vehicle.

Certain campgrounds have higher increases. For instance, Early Winters, Falls Creek, along with War Creek would go from $8 to $15. Blackpine Lake, Chewuch and Klipchuck could range from $12 to $20. Group campsites at the Mystery and Nice campgrounds could range between $8 to $40.

Furthermore, some of the free sites would be requiring a fee. For example, the picnic spot located at Blackpine Lake would be $5. The Goat Peak, Crater Creek, as well as Foggy Dew trailheads would be $5.

The Northwest Forest Pass covers trailhead fees and would also be good for the picnic area at Blackpine Lake.

“This is a long-overdue adjustment to the operating strategy for the sites included in the proposals and will help to keep our sites financially sustainable into the future,” Forest Recreation Program Manager Suzanne Cable said. Fees are consistent with those at sites with similar amenities, she said.

The advisory committee is also examining project proposals for Yakima County.

Public comment will be sought at the meeting. To register for a time to testify or for information on attending the virtual meeting, contact Public Affairs Specialist Robin DeMario at (509) 664-9292 or [email protected] by Monday, Oct. 24. People can also submit written comments.

The meeting is scheduled for October 27 starting at 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
