Volkswagen will be making a new campervan based on its ID. Buzz.

According to a report, the proposed electric ID. California campervan that is based on the ID. Buzz was approved by the supervisory board on Thursday and is anticipated to hit the market in the second half of the decade.

As per the company, there is high demand for its California range in various countries, with orders growing rapidly and continuously in the past few months. Therefore, the board voted to approve the capital expenditure for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to start developing the first fully-electric California.

The ID. California will increase VW’s selection of campervans, including the Caddy California micro camper, the 6.1 California based on the Transporter, and the California XXL model based on the Crafter.

The campervan-style version of the ID. Buzz will utilize the MEB platform and likely use the larger wheelbase body style as a base to allow for more interior space.

Because it’s built for longer journeys, it will probably be equipped with a larger battery pack with 111 kWh, providing enough range and power for camping-related equipment.

The ID. California’s design will likely have the iconic pop-up roof, allowing passengers to stand inside the cabin, creating room for an additional sleeping area. The cabin could also include a kitchenette and neat storage spaces, which benefit from the flat surface of the electric vehicle.

“The ID. California based on the ID. Buzz will combine the ongoing trend towards mobile leisure arrangements with sustainable CO2-neutral mobility,” VW Commercial Vehicles CEO and Chairman of Board of Management Dr. Carsten Intra said.
