Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred Tuesday afternoon in Rockbridge County, a report said.
According to the report, police responded to a call at 12:07 p.m. about a vehicle found in a lake on private campground property off Route 39 on Maury River in Goshen.
Authorities said that further investigation revealed that a Toyota sedan with its three occupants was last seen leaving the campground Monday night at 11:59 p.m.
Police said that the vehicle was about 0.3 miles away from the campground and headed towards Route 39. It then ran off the road, overturned down an embankment, before ending up upside down in the lake, the report added.
Authorities claim that the vehicle was submerged completely in the lake, with the exception of the tires.
The vehicle was recovered with a woman and a child, while the man was found in the lake, the report stated.
The victims’ names have not been released by police, but state police are working to notify their next of kin.
Police say that no criminal activity has been found at this point in the investigation. The incident is being investigated as fatal.
Search efforts were assisted by the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office, the report mentioned.
