The United States land and sea border will reopen to non-essential travel in November following a record-breaking closure due to fears about COVID-19, a report said.

The White House confirmed on Tuesday that visitors who have been fully vaccinated coming from Canada and Mexico would be accepted at border crossings next month. However, officials have not provided details on which vaccines will be allowed and if mixed doses would satisfy eligibility tests.

The restrictions on travel that aren’t essential at the U.S. border have been in place since March 2020, when the coronavirus first started to spread across the globe.

It’s unclear how the U.S. has upheld its closing of the border for this long. This issue is hotly debated by snowbirds and by travelers. However, fully-vaccinated Americans have been able to travel into Canada for non-essential purposes since August 9.

The news of the border being reopened is expected to be welcomed by thousands of Canadian snowbirds worried that they will be forced to remain in their homes for another winter. The prospect of a sunny getaway isn’t the only issue for tourists—who own properties that they could not access since the outbreak.

Martin Firestone, a travel insurance broker, previously told a local report that older travelers typically prefer a car or RV to use when traveling in the U.S., especially if they travel with pets, and would prefer to stay clear of the hassles of flying.
