Trip Advisor administrators had to remove some reviews left by travelers. The company released a Review Transparency Report where they analyzed travelers’ reviews submitted on the platform throughout 2020.

According to a report, more than 2 million reviews, or 8.6 percent of the reviews, have been rejected or removed by Trip Advisor out of the 26 million travelers’ reviews.

This is a significant increase compared to 4.8 percent in 2018.

More than half of all the reviews came from vacations in Europe, making up 54.1 percent of the number. North America constituted 23.5 percent of the reviews, followed by Asia and South Pacific with 13.7 percent as well as Central and South America (4.7 percent) with Africa and the Middle East making up 3.9 percent of the reviews.

A chunk of the reviews (33.9 percent) that violated Trip Advisor’s guidelines were rejected prior to being published, and the rest of the travel reviews were manually removed.

As for the reasons for removal, 48 percent of the travel reviews that were rejected or removed violated the online platform’s guidelines, and 49 percent were deemed fake or biased. The remaining reviews were for closed businesses or those removed by the reviewer themselves.

In removing reviews, the online platform uses an algorithm that automatically scans through reviews prior to being published online. The algorithm automatically rejects those that violate TripAdvisor’s regulations.

Some travel reviews can also be manually removed if the system detects a violation or when another member of the Trip Advisor community reports a review.
