Wind Cave National Parkin South Dakota‘s Rangers will lead programs starting in September and ending in October. The high-pitched whistle of the elk signals the arrival of autumn and the start of mating season, a report said.

Starting September 15, rangers will give brief interpretive programs on elk before leading a caravan of people to a pullout nearby to listen to them. Through October 9, these one-hour programs are offered on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. Participants are invited to meet on the Wind Cave Visitor Center’s front lawn at 7:15 p.m. They are asked to bring a flashlight, a chair, or a blanket to sit down on and dress warmly.

To hear an elk’s bugling call, visit the park’s website at https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/elk-bugling-wica.htm.

The fall ranger programs include Natural Entrance and Garden of Eden Tours of Wind Cave throughout each day. Participants are advised to bring a sweater or light jacket and comfortable walking shoes. No matter what vaccination status, all federal facilities require masks, even cave tours.

The Natural Entrance Tour takes approximately 75 minutes and involves 300 steps. The Garden of Eden Tour takes approximately one hour and includes 150 stairs. The park visitor center will open daily from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. starting September 12. From September 12 through September 30, tours will be available every 30 minutes between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For a schedule of cave tours beginning October 1, or for information about mask requirements and other COVID-19 precautions, visit the park’s website https://www.nps.gov/wica/planyourvisit/guidedtours.htm.
