A couple’s unsuccessful plan to launch an extravagant camping resort ended in multiple convictions for larceny. They will also pay restitution to numerous victims but will not spend any time in prison for their crime as per the judge’s ruling, a report said.

Bradley and Sandra Carlson were each sentenced to pay court costs plus almost $30,000 in restitution and serve two years probation by 86th District Court Judge Robert Cooney.

“I think it could easily be argued that this should be a jail case, given the amount of money that was taken and the number of victims that were involved,” Cooney said during a sentencing hearing Wednesday. But he instead followed recommendations included in a plea agreement in which Kristen Stinedurf, an attorney with the Michigan Attorney General’s office who prosecuted the case, did not seek jail time.

The couple was sentenced to a year in prison for fraud involving 34 victims with the money they paid for a glamping trip, as reported previously.

“There is no excuse,” Bradley Carlson said during the sentencing hearing, adding the popularity of the couple’s concept for the planned “glamping” resort in Antrim County‘s Jordan River Valley in Michigan overwhelmed their ability to self-fund the enterprise.

The Carlsons in 2015 unveiled that they were planning to build a resort. Photos shared on social media, and press materials were of luxurious tents, treehouses, and other novelty villas. These attracted a lot of attention from the media and those who were willing to deposit money.
