A scam using social media has placed Kibby Creek Campground (Michigan) and at least one craft vendor in a bind after extorting the vendor $45 for registering for an event that did not exist.

The fake event was announced on Facebook under the name “Crazy Daisy Christmas Bazaar,” it claimed to be held at the campground on December 11-12. No such event is scheduled by the campground that is now closed for the season, according to a report.

Kibby Creek’s proprietors are hoping to spread the word about the scam so that they can ensure that nobody is harmed, according to David Lundin, the manager.

“We had nothing to do with it, and we never planned on it,” Lundin said.

If enough people are victims of the scam, he said that Kibby Creek is open to the idea of holding a craft fair to avoid an absolute loss for vendors that might be a victim of the scam.

“To begin with, there was no event at all. … But then (we realized) that there are people who were scammed out of their money,” Lundin said. “If there are enough vendors that were scammed, then we’d like to make it possible for them (to recoup the loss) because it’s not their fault.”

Any others who have been victims are required to provide evidence of their payment and send it to [email protected]

The fake event was posted in the Ludington Cares Facebook group and other social media platforms. Kibby Creek’s owners wrote an announcement to warn the group that it was false.

If the campground ends up hosting a fair, Lundin said the proceeds would go to a family in need.
