Maine’s Tremont Planning Board wants an independent professional opinion on whether there is enough groundwater available to provide water for Acadia Wilderness Lodge Campground on Route 102 near Kelleytown Road, a report said.

Perry Lawson LLC and James and Kenya Hopkins have submitted a request to build the campground with 55 sites that would comprise 37 tents and 18 yurts.

At their meeting on September 28, the board decided to request the engineering firm, Haley Ward, to review the claims made by the applicants about the campground’s conformance to the ordinance’s standards for septic, traffic, stormwater runoff, and hydrology. However, there is no provision in the ordinance for hydrology. In addition, Haley Ward did not address this issue in its presentation to the board.

The board’s definition of “hydrology” was groundwater sufficiency. However, Haley Ward didn’t equate these two. Therefore, at their meeting on Tuesday evening, the Planning Board voted to ask Haley Ward to look specifically at the issue of groundwater sufficiency for the planned camping area.

The Planning Board voted to continue the public hearing on October 26 but decided to limit the public’s comments to the topic of groundwater adequacy.

It will be a week prior to the residents voting on a proposed six-month moratorium regarding Planning Board consideration of any camping applications. If the suspension is enacted, it could affect any pending applications as of August 2. This includes the Acadia Wilderness Lodge Campground application.
