An investigation is ongoing after burglars struck an Elkhart RV facility over the holidays.

Police say 94 catalytic converters were stolen from the plant.

According to a report, police believe that sometime between December 23 and January 3, someone was able to cut through the fence of the Forest River plant along County Road one. The plant’s manager informed police that 94 catalytic converters were stolen from RVs.

The crime has become a major issue because of the increasing value of the metals in the converters.

“It’s a crush, it’s a pain, it really is. Knowing somebody’s out there. How can I say this? I don’t know what they’re getting on the black market form, but they must be making some good money to do it,” said Billy Robbins, manager of Custom RV Repair.

He said that replacing a catalytic converter could be costly.

Five were stolen from them back in June.

“You’re looking at basically $2000 a unit on the average. A couple of them were like 25-hundred one was 19-hundred,” said Robbins

Even for larger businesses such as Forest River, that big of a blow could be damaging. If a small-sized business is affected, it could be the end of the line. It’s not just because of the price but also due to consumers’ confidence.

“What’s he going [to tell] another customer? ‘Hey, my unit was with so-and-so, and we had the catalytic converter stolen.’ So it’s a thorn in their side completely, and it’s a thorn in ours,” said Robbins

Given how easy they are to steal, Robbins thinks the thefts are only going to get worse.

Other police departments in the region have warned dealerships and companies with large fleets of cars that they’re frequently the target of these thieves.
