Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park Imposes Partial Road Closure, Campfire Restrictions

According to the National Park Service, dry conditions have prompted Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park to temporarily shut down a portion of Hilina Pali Road to motorized vehicles, and park officials are reminding the public of existing campfire restrictions.

Hilina Pali Road from the gate past the Mauna Iki Trailhead to Hilina Pali Overlook is closed to motorized vehicles, according to a report.

Bicycles and pedestrians are permitted, and those with a backcountry permit for the coastal backcountry or Pepeiao will be given access.

Hilina Pali Road between Chain of Craters Road and Kulanaokuaiki Campground is open. However, campfires are not permitted within the campground and in the backcountry coastal campsites and Pepeiao Cabin. Propane or gas stoves are allowed.

The grassy and dry brushland below Hilina Pali has had less than average rainfall and is an area of concern for elevated fire risk.

Visitors are reminded that they must recreate responsibly. Nearly nine out of ten wildfires nationwide are caused by humans and can be prevented. Prevent wildfires by being aware of any fire restrictions in place.
