Last week, Ford and General Motors announced that they were forming closer ties with semiconductor makers to increase their stock of electronic chips as the auto industry faces supply issues.

According to a report, Ford has reached a non-binding deal with GlobalFoundries, which is a New York-based chip maker, which it claims “opens the door” for collaborative research and development, as well as manufacturing of chips to be used in the assembly line of its company and other lines within the U.S. automotive industry.

GM President Mark Reuss told investors that as trucks and cars become more electronic, the demand for semiconductors will become “more than doubling over the next several years.”

Because of this, the company is in the process of forming collaborations to work with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world’s top chipmaker. The company will also team up with NXP Semiconductors, Qualcomm, and other companies.

Meanwhile, Ford said the agreement could boost its stock of chips in a matter of months.

The automotive industry is being pressed by the shortage of semiconductors, restricting sales of new vehicles.

Manufacturers did not expect last year’s drop in demand for vehicles and trucks to bounce back faster than they were expecting this year. Now, they are in a battle with consumer electronics manufacturers for chips.
