Lassen Volcanic National Park in California has closed due to the proximity of the Dixie Fire, a raging 322,502-acre blaze that grew by 50,000 acres overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

“The Dixie Fire is active on the east side of the park. “All uses are restricted to the entire park to permit firefighter access,” stated a brief message on the park website.

It was not immediately clear how far the fire was from the national park. Officials from the park could not be reached on Thursday.

The fire, which was first spotted on July 13, has exhibited “extreme behavior” due to low relative humidity and strong winds, according to incident fire staff.

Due to the unpredictable nature of the fire, Lassen banned backcountry camping. The Warner Valley and Juniper lakes areas were also closed to all visitors. There was only one way in and out. The fire was located about 12 miles southeast of the national parks.
