“I think there’s a demand for them simply because rent in Baldwin County has gotten so high. There’s a lot of workers in town with growth that we are experiencing. I do think they serve a purpose, but we need to be very careful of the impact they have on utilities, the density in a certain area, and also on traffic,” saidMayor Sherry Sullivan.
Most of the latestand neighborhood applications are for high-end , and planning officials anticipate seeing more of these applications.
“We have citizens who come to us and say ‘what? you’re allowing anto come [to] this location?’ …But it’s in an un-zoned area, so we are evaluating traffic, we’re evaluating stormwater, we’re evaluating utilities, but beyond that, we don’t have the toolset without to evaluate the compatibility…. and that’s usually everybody’s concern—they don’t want an right next to their residential home,” said Brown.
In the hopes of getting some control, and residents will vote on whether or not they want to be one of the county’s planning and jurisdictions. Voting is scheduled for February 15.
