Baldwin County Sees Surge in RV Park Permit Applications

According to a report, Alabama‘s Baldwin County is seeing an increase in RV park permit applications. The majority of the parks are being reviewed and discussed currently.

Officials claim that the applications are all about wide-open spaces in zoned and un-zoned areas of the county. Planning officials declare that 20% of requests are about RV parks.

“I think there’s a demand for them simply because rent in Baldwin County has gotten so high. There’s a lot of workers in town with growth that we are experiencing. I do think they serve a purpose, but we need to be very careful of the impact they have on utilities, the density in a certain area, and also on traffic,” said Fairhope Mayor Sherry Sullivan.

Most of the latest RV park and RV neighborhood applications are for high-end projects, and planning officials anticipate seeing more of these applications.

“We have citizens who come to us and say ‘what? you’re allowing an RV park to come [to] this location?’ …But it’s in an un-zoned area, so we are evaluating traffic, we’re evaluating stormwater, we’re evaluating utilities, but beyond that, we don’t have the toolset without zoning to evaluate the compatibility…. and that’s usually everybody’s concern—they don’t want an RV park right next to their residential home,” said Brown.

In the hopes of getting some control, Fairhope and Seminole residents will vote on whether or not they want to be one of the county’s planning and zoning jurisdictions. Voting is scheduled for February 15.
