Tourism in Alabama stayed strong during the pandemic, according to Alabama Tourism Director Lee Sentell.

In 2020, Alabama was one of the top five states that did not suffer huge tourism revenue loss.

“It’s all because of the beaches, state parks, campgrounds, and RVs of people wanting to get outdoors,” he told local news.

Sentell attributes a portion of the achievement to perfect timing.

“We had planned and had already begun to execute a three-year campaign about outdoor recreation in Alabama, and we started that in January just as COVID was starting,” he explained.

Unfortunately, cities that rely on meetings and conventions did not have the same experience.

“A lot of those just have not happened in the last couple of years. And so the convention and visitors bureaus and the cities have had to adjust their spending and their expectations accordingly,” he said.

Plans to draw more tourists this year are not public, but Sentell said big changes are on the way.
