Despite the letters of Prince Edward County mayor and the heritage advocates hiring a lawyer to protect their rights, demolition still pushed through for two historic homes at Sandbanks Provincial Park that had been abandoned for many decades.

Residents were taken by surprise at the demolition. A report said it is being compared to the Ontario government’s attempt to demolish Dominion Foundry buildings in Toronto earlier this year and its plan to get rid of the First Parliament Site where Upper Canada’s first parliament buildings were.

Peter Lockyer was part of the Prince Edward County group, trying to convince Ontario Parks to save the houses and repurpose them. He ran out to take pictures when he saw the wrecking crew moving on the park.

“The locals are attached to these buildings, ” Liz Driver, spokesperson for Save Heritage Sandbanks Homes, stated.

“Some of their first jobs were in these restaurants,” she added.

According to the Ontario government, the homes pose a safety and health risk. They were of no heritage value, except a hog shed that will be preserved, said Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks David Piccini to Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson.
