A popular campground and park located in British Columbia‘s Fraser Valley is suffering damages caused by a series of storms last month.

Cultus Lake Provincial Park, located 11 kilometers southwest of Chilliwack, was hard hit by heavy rain in the middle of November. According to a report, the wind whipped the trees and sent them crashing.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Environment reported that various locations in Cultus Lake Park have been damaged by soil erosion and debris flow.

“These include, but are not limited to, washed out access roads and sites within our campgrounds, and a debris flow event in one of our day-use areas,” says the spokesperson.

Trevor Carne, a Chilliwack resident who regularly goes to the park, said: “One slide was probably 100 feet wide and sent about four feet of gravel.”

Picnic tables were submerged under a layer of gravel, leaving only the tops visible, Carne shared, adding that hundreds of trees fell.

“Just the amount of logs that have just washed up on the beach, like thousands, thousands of logs. They’ve piled them all up.”

The ministry spokesperson assured that BC Parks and contractors have completed the urgent work required to control the ongoing damage.

“We are undertaking assessments of the damage, gathering information, and will begin planning for our recovery from the impacts over the days, weeks, and months to come,” says the spokesperson.

The ministry claims it’s too early for a definitive estimate of how long the repairs will take.

“We are still gathering information regarding the extent of the damage. We’ll have a better idea of how long the work will take after we gain a more fulsome understanding of the work required,” says the spokesperson.
