Alberta Fire Ban Partially Lifted

The city’s fire ban, which had been in effect for almost two months, has been partially lifted, a report said.

According to the City of Medicine Hat, residents are now allowed to use their legal backyard firepit as per their permit.

Gas City Campground, Kin Coulee Park, and Kin City Central Park, as well as the main Echo Dale Regional Park area, will allow fires in their fire pits.

The fire ban does not apply to the Strathcona Island Park fire pits and the Echo Dale Regional Park fire pits at the east end.

Charcoal barbecues are now also allowed.

Even with recent rain and cooler temperatures, fires can still get out of control.

Brian Stauth, Fire Chief, stated that prairie grasses and brush in our hills, coulees, and natural open spaces are still quite dry despite the rains and cooler temperatures. He advised people to “keep your fires small, and keep water available to extinguish any flames.”

Residents are reminded by the city that any backyard fire pit within the city’s boundaries requires a permit. Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services can issue firepit permits. To apply for a fire pit permit, visit the city website.

Since June 28, the fire ban has been in effect.
