Storms Delay Camping Season In Mornington Peninsula

According to a report, camping will start late for popular Mornington Peninsula sites. The delay will take up to eight weeks following recent storms that caused massive damage to the region.

The Mornington Peninsula Shire (Victoria, Australia) has reported that the affected areas include Rosebud, Rye, Sorrento, and McCrae.

The council said that there were many calls from residents in need of assistance following the recent bout of extreme weather.

This week, some inhabitants of the Mornington Peninsula remained without electricity following the storms, which caused significant damage to electrical infrastructure.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Despi O’Connor stated that she would like to have a few sections of the campground available shortly, but the security of campers was her top priority.

“We will await advice from the experts that trees have been declared safe before opening,” she said. “We are so keen to have campers back on the peninsula, but unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a little longer.”

The council claimed it had informed campers about the delay. The season was scheduled to begin on Friday.

The opening of the camping grounds will be reeled after they have been deemed safe.

Mornington Peninsula Regional Tourism Board Chairman Roger Lancia said campers were an essential aspect of the region’s summer tourism.

Lancia said that many businesses close to the camping sites were dependent on campers during the high-volume season.

However, in Rye, Vulcano Gelato owner Maria Azevedo said it had been so busy lately that local businesses would not be affected by the late start of the camping season.

Many people have also relocated to the area permanently.

“It’s so congested up here,” she said. “It’s been busy every day.”
