New Zealand superbike rider of the 1970s and 80s Gary Goodfellow and business partner Jas Chahal acquired Lawrence city’s Gold Park Motor Camp about one year ago, a report said. They have been quietly working on improvements since then.

They are now prepared to increase activity and take advantage of the upcoming Clutha Gold Trail cycleway extension from Lawrence to Waihola. It will run past the Harrington St. camping ground entrance.

The campground’s reception is a reflection of the motocross history of Goodfellow. It is packed with motorcycles and related items, which he believes might eventually be part of an on-site museum.

The camp was once divided into seasonal shearing quarters as well as caravan and camping sites for periodic usage by guests or “regulars.”

The shearing area was being renovated for tourist use. Plans were being made to include luxurious “eco-cabins.”

“We’re aiming to have a couple of spas, continue to upgrade facilities, and do some further landscaping.

“We want to cater to a wide range of visitors from backpackers in tents and dorms to those wanting something more luxurious.”

Visitors and cyclists could be the key to increasing revenue. They are also planning to add an on-site bike repair or supply store.

Chahal expressed optimism that they could attract an enthusiastic audience for their unique blend of track and peace.
